:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from David Perry -- Baum is still Magic! : You really can't go wrong with L Frank Baum. If you are familiar with only the Wizard of Oz, and that only by the movie, I urge you to get this spectacularly low priced omnibus and dig right in. Baum had a fantastical imagination and ranks with Lord Dunsany, or with Blackwood or Lovecraft but always in his own, child friendly way. You won't be disappointed. My mother was a children's librarian but when she was a child on a dusty farm in Nevada, she read every book by Captain Baum that she could get her hands on. Every journey begins with a single step. Persevere. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2017 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Andre M. -- Tales of whimsy, innocence, and wonder : This is a delightful book of whimsy-filled tales that Baum wrote shortly after his best known work THE WIZARD OF OZ. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2011 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Freemont DelRay -- Very enjoyable : Certainly a product of its time, the tales are imaginative and entertaining but definitely grounded in Baum's times. He creates little vignettes and small moral tales as well as a few tongue in cheek witticisms. Generally enjoyable light reading. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2019 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from PAM -- Funny Stories with Twists & Turns : Twelve wonderful, funny stories. Many with a closing comment by the author. Twists & Turns with predictability in some cases, but overall entertaining. Whether stories feature adults, animals, birds, insects, or children, there are strong female & male characters illustrated as well as some with flaws, but that's what makes them entertaining and fun to read. Lessons can be taught to children as they are read the stories by an adult (& questioned for understanding). ( Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2014 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Leigh E Johnson -- ... been reading these stories to my daughter and have enjoyed them. : I have been reading these stories to my daughter and have enjoyed them... but they are a product of the era during which they were written and, as such, have some overtly racist language. I edited on the fly while reading to my daughter and substituted less offensive words as appropriate. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2018 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Mommy of Four Boys -- There's a reason I hadn't heard of these : I thought it would be neat to read them, since written by the author of the Wizard of Oz. They are ok, nothing objectionable but nothing especially interesting either. I read them to myself with the thought of reading them later to my boys -- but can't see them finding them interesting. Almost all of them ended with a line about the moral you were supposed to get from the story -- they didn't seem to fit and hitting someone on the head with that is kind of off-putting. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Sweet stories each not too long : 100 or so pages of light original stories. Would have liked the book to be longer. Do also love the author's oz series of books. These are written long ago and some language isn't politically correct. A good teaching tool. Shows how language and people and society can change. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from C. Grant -- Clever : What a nice surprise this book was. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2010 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Varied Read -- Lovely : Downloaded this for my son - wasn't sure what to expect as I'd downloaded a few other fairy stories that I ended up deleting. This one is lovely, easy to read aloud stories that my son (and me!) are enjoying reading together very much. He enjoys them so much he won't go to sleep until the story is finished!
